Principal
We have had another action-packed term. I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our staff here at Proserpine State School, you all do an amazing job creating fabulous memories and experiences for our students. When I consider all we have done this term, I can see why we are all ready for the holidays. This term we have had camps, excursions, NAIDOC, athletics carnivals, eisteddfod ….. just to name a few of our events. A big congratulations to our students for their amazing behaviour and effort in all of these activities!
This term we took the time to celebrate our students here at Proserpine State School and their amazing Semester One results to celebrate. I want to acknowledge the outstanding behaviour and commitment to learning of the vast majority of our students, the following results speak for themselves…….
- 92.8% of students received A-C for all subjects, with 65.3% receiving an A or B
- 92.6% of student received an A-C for behaviour, with 78.1% receiving and A or B. 49.6% of our students received an A for behaviour. Incredible!
- 95.9% of grades awarded for all subjects for effort were A-C, with 85.5% of results being an A or B. A huge 59.2% of grades awarded were an A.
Infrastructure
We are very excited to announce that our car park will be finished over the holidays. We have already had a lot of positive feedback regarding the stop, drop and go entrance being moved. Just a reminder there is no parking on the road side of the stop, drop and go. We also have significant work being done:
- B Block asbestos removal - September holidays
- P Block asbestos removal and upgrade - Christmas holidays
- C Block downstairs classrooms asbestos removal and upgrade - Term 1 or Term 2
- Bell upgrade
- Senior Playground upgrade - Christmas holidays
- Admin block external paint
- Foyer H Block painted
- L Block removal - Christmas
2025 Annual Implementation Plan
We are very excited to have made great gains towards our 2025 Annual Implementation Plan. We look forward to welcoming feedback, through the P&C, around our 2026 planning. Our 2025 plan is:
- Improve the level of achievement for all students in English and Mathematics.
- Further implement Multi-Tiered Systems of Support to meet the needs of all learners.
- Further refine an evidence-based Collegial Engagement Framework, leading to improved student outcomes.
P&C
Thank you to our very hard-working P&C, we are very lucky to have such an amazing group of dedicated people working towards supporting our school to be a better place. You are very much appreciated.
2026 Classes
Thank you to the many parents who emailed, called or met with me regarding classes for next year. The time for parent input has now closed. From here, teachers will create classes. Students will be meet their 2026 teacher early next term, they will have a number of sessions over the term where students and teachers can spend time getting to know each other. Once classes are advised, we will not be making changes.

As you are aware, I will be moving to the position of School Improvement Coach fulltime next term. I look forward to seeing you all in 2026.
Have a fantastic break.

Sweetest School Competition – Growing Future Farmers! Friday 18th July
Proserpine State School year 2 students are excited to take part in the Sweetest School Competition, a hands-on challenge where students grow their own sugarcane! Supported by CANEGROWERS and local mentors, Bess and Sam Orr, students will learn about sustainable farming, agriculture, and the sugar industry — all while competing for the title of the region’s “Sweetest School.” We can’t wait to see our cane grow and share this journey with our community!
Junior Athletics Carnival – A Day of Fun, Team Spirit and Leadership!- Wednesday 30 July
Our Junior Athletics Carnival was a fantastic day filled with energy, enthusiasm, and school spirit! A special shout-out to our House Captains, who led with pride and encouraged our younger students every step of the way. Their support and leadership helped create a positive and inclusive atmosphere, making the day a memorable experience for all.

‘Get Ready’ Filming Day – 21st August
As a culminating activity for a group of Year 5 students who studied extreme weather in Term 3, the Whitsunday Shire Council (WRC) filming day was a fantastic opportunity to get involved and help promote the “Get Ready” message for cyclone season. The school was approached by Tropical Exposure, the company hired by WRC, and we were proud to be the first school filmed. Students were joined by Constable Josh Gibbins, Jess and Elena from the SES team, making the shoot both fun and engaging. Ben, the filmmaker, praised the students as “FANTASTIC!” — perhaps some future stars in the making! Keep an eye out for the campaign launching in October.

ICAS Testing
ICAS tests occurred over the course of 3 weeks this term with students who self-nominated undertaking tests in Digital Technology, Writing, English, Spelling, Science and Mathematics. We look forward to seeing how the students went when their results are returned next term.
Prep Taster Visits at Proserpine State School – Week 2 and 3
We were thrilled to welcome our future Preppies during the recent Kindy visits! The children explored our classrooms, met our friendly staff, and enjoyed a taste of big school life. It was a wonderful opportunity to build confidence, make connections, and get excited about starting Prep next year. We can’t wait to see these smiling faces again soon!
Also, as part of their learning and transition, our Prep students visited Kindy — and they were thrilled to return! The visit sparked excitement and led to some fantastic speeches as students shared their favourite moments. It was a joyful experience that helped strengthen connections and build confidence.
Our Transition Program continues next term with important enrolment interviews and Starting Strong sessions. If you know any families who haven’t yet enrolled, please encourage them to submit their paperwork as soon as possible. We’re excited to welcome our future Preppies!

Year 6 into Year 7 Transition program
This term has seen our Year 6s again being visited by PSHS staff as they begin to prepare for high school in 2026. A big feature this term was the students actually going to the high school for a half day visit. They came back very excited and full of talk of the kitchens and workshops they were able to access while there. The program ramps up into Term 4 with some additional smaller group visits to come and the full day transition for all students on Monday Week 10.

Fun times
We love having the opportunity for our students to enjoy a themselves as we observe various special days throughout the year. This term the Student Council promoted a Crazy Hair and Socks Day which was held in Week 4. This was not a fundraising day this year, just a fun day to see how creative everyone could get. We then had a chance to add a Pop of Purple to uniforms in Week 5 during Bullying No Way Week, followed by adding something yellow to our uniforms in Week 9 as we observed RUOK Day.
Book Week and Book Week parade
A big favourite every year in our school – especially for our staff. This year didn’t disappoint with everyone really getting into the theme of “Book an adventure” and going all out with costumes. You may have seen (and heard) a wicked witch getting around the MPC with her evil cackle, run into some Minions, met up with a handful of Doras or even seen the many-legged very hungry caterpillar. SO MUCH FUN!!!!

IM Strings and Band recruitment
Mr Harries and Mr Williams are in the process of recruiting students for instrumental music for 2026. Students in Year 2 have been able to apply and try out for the Strings program, with students in Year 3 now being able to do the same for Band. Students in older year levels may be able to apply and parents should come to the office to find out more information if interested.
Father’s Day Stall
We would like to say a big thanks to the P&C for once again holding the Father’s Day Stall for our students at school. Being able to provide all students an opportunity to make a purchase is very much appreciated, and the beaming smiles as they come back from the stall with their special gift for their parent is priceless. Thanks also to the many volunteers who turned up on the day to assist – it is this support that allows the P&C to continue to provide these stalls for your children.
Queensland Parliamentary Visit
Year 5 and 6 had an incursion in Week 9 with each class being visited by staff from the Queensland Parliamentary Services. The team spoke to students about the parliamentary system also showed them a Mace.

Parent Teacher Interviews
Thank you to all parents and carers who came along this term for our Parent Teacher Interviews evening. We highly value the chance to sit down with parents to discuss student progress in terms 1 and 3 and encourage parents to avail themselves of this opportunity which always happens in Week 10 in terms 1 and 3.

Curriculcum Matters

This term in English, all students have demonstrated their understanding and skills in speaking and listening for assessment, creating an oral presentation. Whilst the Preps had to retell an experience, and the Year 1 students recounted a simple procedure, all others year levels’ purpose was persuasive. Think about how we need these skills in everyday life; encouraging our kids to make positive or healthy choices, requesting better service or goods at shops, explaining your needs clearly to a doctor, or influencing family or group decisions. Whilst we use the ratings on assessment tasks to allocate grades on a Report Card, more importantly, teaching and learning to be persuasive is a life-long skill we all need to function in our families, communities and world.

In Mathematics, students have had to demonstrate their skills at Mathematical Modelling. The focus is on our students solving an open-ended problem, communicating their thinking, formulating a plan and using digital tools where applicable. One way you can help at home is to pose the question, ‘Where’s the maths in that?’ when shopping, cooking, driving, going to the cinema or skatepark. Deciding how to share the packet of lollies? You’re thinking like a mathematician. Deciding on which cereal to buy based on size and price? You’re thinking like a mathematician. Wondering how to take a recipe for 2 servings and make it for 5? You’re thinking like a mathematician. Let’s help make it more obvious to our kids.

Mackay Eisteddfod
On Thursday, 14th of August, Proserpine State School's Eisteddfod Choir travelled to Mackay to compete against other school choirs in the Mackay Choral Eisteddfod. 36 young ladies from Years 3-6 were very excited to show off their hard work. We competed in the Year 6 and Under category and were up against 9 other choirs from some Mackay schools. Our Eisteddfod Choir sung Excuse Me! Mr Curlew (to honour our Curlew family that we see every Monday outside our Music Room) and When I Grow Up, a 2-part choral arrangement by Tim Minchin from the musical adaptation of MATILDA. Harlow Ruge, a Yr 7 student from Proserpine State High School gave up a portion of her Mondays to come and accompany us in rehearsals and on competition day. We came away with a Bronze Award this year, up against some tough competition. Our Choir Captains, Ella Zealand and Sophie Dening, went up on stage to receive our award.
Mrs Karlee Atkinson attended as our Teacher Aide and she and I agreed that the level of behaviour and how the girls conducted themselves was to be commended. They represented our school with pride and were very respectful whilst other schools performed in the auditorium.
The girls in the Eisteddfod Choir have worked very hard during Terms 2 and 3, committing to a Monday Morning Tea rehearsal each week, and some extra rehearsals closer to competition time. I am so proud of their efforts and they should be very proud of themselves too. It is such a wonderful experience to compete against other choirs, for these children to see the calibre of repertoire that can be sung and to see other choirs perform on the stage.
Thank you to their parents who supported them whether it was by helping them to learn the repertoire at home, ensuring the choir shirts were washed and ready to wear, getting them to school on time to leave early for Mackay and some even came down to watch the Eisteddfod competition on the bus or by private transport. Your support means the world to your child and to me, as Choir Director as well.
I look forward to what 2026 brings and I hope that your child has the desire to be in a Proserpine State School choir in the coming years.

Kind regards,
Yours in Music,

What Happened In General
Year 2 History Excursion
On Monday 1 September and Wednesday 3 September, Year Two students visited the Proserpine Museum to learn about life in the past and how it has changed over time.
Students were immersed in history, trying on olden day clothes, playing indoor games from the past and participating in a classroom with slates and chalk. They sat in an old movie theatre, investigated the contents of an old slab hut, washed clothes on a wash board and pegged them up with old wooden pegs. The children were fascinated by the old steam locomotive, the collection of World War memorabilia and the handmade wooden speed boat. Students were impressed by the gramophone and phone exchange. They also wanted to know more about the mustard gas station and soft drink factories which use to be in the district.
A special thankyou is forwarded to the museum staff and volunteers who guided the students through the museum and provided the hands-on activities for Year Two to experience a taste of the past. Your patience in answering questions and satisfying the inquisitive minds of year two students was most appreciated. Many of the students said they would love to return and see more.

Year 5 Camp
In Week 10, our Year 5 students attended a two day camp at Seaforth Outdoor Education Centre. The weather was absolutely amazing and the students had a blast with all of the activities on offer as you can see if the photos.

Year 6 Camp
In Week 5, our Year 6 students attended a three-day camp at Kinchant Outdoor Education Centre. Their behaviour was phenomenal, and every student thoroughly enjoyed the exciting activities on offer, including archery, the giant swing, high ropes, orienteering, team challenges, and building catapults.
The teachers were extremely impressed with the resilience, respect, and leadership shown by our Year 6 cohort. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zones, build teamwork skills, and create lasting memories.

Solid Pathways
STEM University Experience – James Cook University
The Solid Pathways STEM University Experience gives Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students a hands-on look into science, technology, engineering, and maths at leading universities. Through interactive workshops, campus tours, and mentoring, students explore exciting STEM careers while building confidence and connections. It’s a powerful way to inspire future leaders and innovators.
Solid pathways has been a very fun experience with getting to go to Townsville seeing the James cook university and also doing online classes every week. This has been a great extra curriculum activity which is so fun and challenges you in so many different ways - by Willow
Solid pathways has been a really fun educational experience, having many opportunities such as visiting the James Cook University. Also having Indigenous based online classes and learning new things every week, I'm very grateful to have this privilege and opportunity! - by Mihla-Rose
I have had an amazing experience with coding this term with Mr Joel and the previous term with Mr B. We recently went to JCU for an excursion – by Harrier

NAIDOC Week 2025 – The Next Generation
This year’s NAIDOC Week celebrations at Proserpine State School were an incredible success, bringing together students, staff, families, and community to honour and celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through the theme ‘The Next Generation!’
The week was filled with meaningful learning experiences and powerful moments of connection. Our official NAIDOC Ceremony was a standout event — the pride and respect shown by our students was remarkable. From the heartfelt performances by Prep and Year 6 students, to the moving Next Generation video created by our students.
Across the week, the whole school embraced the NAIDOC spirit through a wide range of activities:
- Cultural tuckshop specials
- A self-portrait art class led by Ms Keay, where students explored identity and cultural expression.
- Classroom learning experiences highlighting First Nations languages and boomerang art.
- Storytelling at the Yarning Circle, where students listened, shared and reflected.
- A Connecting to Culture talk delivered by Sam McLean to Year 5 students.
- A whole-school colouring-in and poster competition, encouraging creativity and reflection on this year’s theme.
- A hands-on Boomerang Throwing Workshop, which gave students the opportunity to engage with an important aspect of First Nations culture.
- A special First Nations Community Afternoon Tea, where families and community members came together to view our First Nation students’ art display ‘The Next Generation’.

Chappy Lydia
Recently, Chappy Lydia worked with a group of enthusiastic students to spread kindness throughout the school. Together, they brainstormed positive messages, painted vibrant designs, and created Kindness Rocks. Each rock carries a message of encouragement, reminding others that small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Donations
The school is in desperate need of black shorts for both boys and girls.
We have had many kids needing to be provided with new shirts and shorts for different reasons. Unfortunately this has now depleted our spare clothing supply. If you have any old school shorts/shirts that no longer fit your child, we would absolutely love to take them off your hands.

We’d like to say thank you again to all our wonderful volunteers. We really do appreciate you all so much.
A special thanks to Pauline Tawihai who is such an amazing help to us every Thursday.
This term we made cupcakes for Naidoc day that turned out amazing and were enjoyed by all.
As always, we have our red food day at the end of each term. This term this was celebrated on fun Friday 19th September. The students all loved our frog jelly’s, M&M cookies and lolly cupcakes.

Lastly we’d love to say thank you as always to all the families that continue to support us. Your support is very appreciated.
From everyone here we’d like to say have a fantastic school holiday and we will see you all next term.
